How the day-of-week calculator works
We use an adaptation of Zeller's congruence, a formula published in 1882 by Christian Zeller. It works for any date in the Gregorian calendar (October 15, 1582 to present, plus the proleptic Gregorian back to year 1).
Zeller's formula (Gregorian)
h = (q + ⌊13(m+1)/5⌋ + K + ⌊K/4⌋ + ⌊J/4⌋ - 2J) mod 7
Where: h = day of week (0=Saturday), q = day of month, m = month (3=March, ..., 14=February), K = year of century, J = zero-based century. The same algorithm powers Windows, macOS, and Linux calendar applications.
